Alabama Board of Medical Examiners

The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners: 

  • Certifies that applicants meet the statutory requirements for licensure, investigates complaints, and initiates formal actions against licensed physicians.
  • Certifies individuals who manufacture, distribute, or dispense controlled substances within the framework of Ala. Code §§ 20-2-50 through 20-2-280 (physicians, Physician Assistants, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners, and Certified Nurse Midwives).
  • Regulates the practices of Physician Assistants and Anesthesiologist Assistants, who must hold a current license to practice and also be registered to a supervising physician to lawfully engage in practice as an Advanced Practice Provider.
  • Jointly with the Board of Nursing, regulates all areas of advanced practice nursing and the collaborative practices between licensed physicians and Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives.
  • Jointly with the Board of Pharmacy, regulates collaborative practice agreements entered into by physicians and pharmacists.
  • Is authorized to issue a physician certification authorizing a registered qualified patient to use medical cannabis.
  • Issues temporary certificates of qualification and licenses to physicians and physician assistants who are relocated or stationed in this state under official military orders.
  • Issues permits for certain medical school graduates to practice medicine in a limited capacity for a limited time as a bridge year graduate physician.
